Throughout his long and successful career, Ball explored many styles across his printmaking, painting and drawing including Hard-edge Abstraction, Colour Field and Lyrical Abstraction. However, it was his undying love for colour and its ability to add music to a simple form that earned him his reputation as a master composer of graphic harmonies.

The Canto series is an exquisite example of the refined, finished quality that has come to define Balls abstract forms. Compelling in their symmetry and their striking, intense colours, the Canto series is one part abstraction, and one part spiritualism: for Ball, the circle is the ultimate symbol of infinity. Working with Michelle Perry at Marnling Press in Sydney, Ball discovered and was enthralled by the multi-dimensionality of metallic paints, added to later works in the Canto series. This discovery transformed Balls work, adding new levels of depth and complexity.

These works also tell of Balls time spent living and painting in America, where he was heavily inspired by Colour Field and Abstract painting during the 1960s. The moment is mystical, alive with curiosity, wonder and discovery. It was created with cut-outs and an airbrush, an experimental technique that lingers between printmaking and painting.

Blackman’s airbrush cut-outs are relatively rare yet historically interesting, with representation at the National Gallery of Australia and the British Museum. In Stephen Coppel’s book ‘Out of Australia’, he suggests that the artist first encountered cut-outs working for the ‘Sun’ newspaper in the 1940s. In the early 1960s, he began creating them for his children to use as mobiles and in 1969, engaged cut-outs again to approach sculpture.

For Blackman, cut-outs served technical and aesthetic ends. He was taken by silhouettes and shadows – motifs that recall memory, disconnection and mystery. By casting shapes against a haze of paint, Blackman untethered his imagery from a specific time or place. These configurations became wisps of feeling, dreams hovering at the lip of consciousness.

Dated circa 1965, ‘Hand and Leaf’ comes from Blackman’s archives and is accompanied by the Certificate of Authenticity from The Charles Blackman Foundation. Many significant printmakers studied under Macnab during the interwar period — among them a cohort of Australian artists including Peter Purves Smith, an early proponent of Surrealism in Australia, as well as major female printmakers Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers, and Eveline Syme, and the modernist George Bell.

Macnab’s classes were taught from his own house, bringing together creatives working in wood engraving, modern dance and traditional art. Under his guidance, a generation of artists drastically transformed their style, finding a groundbreaking new visual language made up of dynamic, modern forms. Many would bring their revelations back to Australia to inspire the following generation.

In this lithograph, Macnab figures an athletic female nude, arranged vertically with a weightlessness that seems more machine than human. The human form is reduced down to a finely arranged sequence of bold strokes that echo Futurist sculptures of the early twentieth century, as well as the Art Deco forms that dominated avant garde design during the 1920s. Art critic Christopher Heathcote described this “impressive lithograph” as one of one of the visual highpoints during its inclusion in an exhibition at Eastgate Gallery in 1991. In Macnab’s rendering, the most traditional of genres - the female nude - is transformed into a dynamic representation of modernity.

Iain Macnab’s experimental approach to composition was hugely influential during his life.
