Melinda Harper is among Australia’s foremost abstract artists. Her work is the splendour of colour, impossibly vibrant configurations that invite the viewer to experience a moment of “pure looking”. As a teenager she visited the National Gallery of Australia and was struck by the American Abstract Expressionists; as an adult, she is moved by long walks and drives, as well as the history of Modernist Female Artists. A celebration of colour and form, Harper is interested in how the interplay of different colours affects their cadence, how they rear in weight, emotion and the landscape. ‘Untitled’ is a masterful example of this, a visual feast that hypnotises with every glance. Harper was part of Know My Name, the NGA’s major retrospective of Female Artists. She was honoured with a retrospective at Heide Museum of Modern Art in 2015, and was a leading member of the Store 5 artists’ group based in Melbourne. Her work is essential for collections of contemporary and abstract art, representing a profound exercise in “the act of looking, the obvious, the precise and the precious”.
