Dated 1993, ‘Camp by Yabby Creek’ is boldly Pro Hart. An original oil painting, it pictures a campsite surrounding a creek in the Australian outback – the sky is strikingly blue, luminous against the orange dirt beneath. Figures mill about, spindly eucalyptus shoot upwards, dogs chase one another and a man stoops to examine fishing nets. Under the unrelenting Australian sun, life improbably churns.

An icon of Australian art, Hart gave a voice to rural life, using his expressive brushwork to delight, narrate and communicate. ‘Camp by Yabby Creek’ is a fine example of his practice – richly coloured, textual and embroidered with many moments, each waiting to be discovered.
