Cliff Jones is an accomplished printmaker whose work trades in the kind of effortlessness that can only be wrought by a master. ‘Silica Minerals’, an abstract monotype, exemplifies this. Like the best abstract art, it is almost spiritual in its presence — black emulsifying into plum then lilac and beige. It is liquid beneath the eye, a study in nature’s abstractions.
Unlike other printmaking methods, monotypes are unique (rather than multiples). They are sites of experimentation and serendipity for artists, and in their uniqueness precious.
Jones is represented in multiple public collections including the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the National Gallery of Australia. He is the recipient of multiple printmaking awards and has exhibited widely. For collectors of abstract art, ‘Silica Minerals’ is a meditative find. It will transfix you.
