Do you see them? Throughout Peter Kingston’s ‘Sydney Harbour’ hide May Gibbs’s children book characters. Gumnut Babies pepper eucalyptus trees, Scotty struts through centre-frame, Mr Lizard suns in the foreground, nosey neighbours peek over fences to watch a platypus canoe. There is delight to find in every inch.

Known as the “last great poetic-painter of Sydney Harbour”, Kingston was deeply tied to Sydney Harbour. He campaigned to protect its heritage throughout his life and even enjoyed a pen-pal relationship with the Opera House’s architect, Jørn Oberg. Kingston also adored May Gibbs, and was a patron of her cottage. At his beloved Lavender Bay, a foreshore boardwalk bears his name beside bronze sculptures of her characters.

‘Sydney Harbour’, intricate with childhood nostalgia, is a visual adventure. Serendipity, whimsy and mischief rule. For collectors of Kingston or admirers of May Gibbs, ‘Sydney Harbour’ is a rare, hand-signed happy ending.
