In amongst a hillside of sinuous cypress, rests a wood cabin escape. The cool sky contrasting the warm ground, the scene is luminous with afternoon light.

Vincent Van Goghs, Wooden Cabins among the Olive Trees achieved an auction record in 2021. Hidden away in private collections, the painting briefly came to public light after exceeding price expectations. A key piece, representing the landscape surrounding his asylum, it marks the moment when Vincent tried to poison himself by swallowing paints. Passed from Theos widow to a key art dealer of the New York avant-garde scene, the painting eventually returned to a private collection in Paris, Brussels, before again returning to New York.

Here a painting of a painting, Van Goghs tranquil madness is reinterpreted within the madness of a marketplace. The scene reformed, an impression of post-impressionism, painterly brush marks re-express feelings of a painting rarely seen.
