In 1973, a printmaking studio in Venice – Centro Internazionale Della Grafica Venezia – commissioned nineteen artists to respond to Venice. The portfolio, titled Venice Yesterday Today Tomorrow, brings together senior Italian artists. Disparate in style and philosophy, these works present a portal into the lineage, tensions and desires of Venice, once the heart of Western art.

Leo Lionni’s ‘Untitled (Venice Below)’ is a delectably surrealist landscape. From a swamp rear strange flora, reminiscent of mutating vegetables. Beneath the surface stews rubbish: combs; tin cans; and bolts. In his work’s murkiness, Lionni’s vision of Venice grows clear.

Lionni became famous as a children’s book author and illustrator, winning fans across the world with his simple, effective stories. Indeed, his work has elements of parable and whimsy. He is represented at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. For collectors of twentieth century prints, ‘Untitled (Venice Below)’ is a striking find.
