Rebecca Mayo is an accomplished artist and printmaker. She is interested in the performative aspects of printmaking, it’s repetition and reiterations – processes she likens to walking and its meditative potential. Recently, her work has centred around ecology, finding poetic and unexpected ways to evoke the climate concerns we live beneath.
‘My Beasties’ is a charming example of Mayo’s practice. In it, she carves out two silhouettes of children, red stitching loops before them, creating a sense of movement and whimsy. All tangled hair and aloft fingers, these children are little beasts – their eyes searching for chaos, treats and traveens.
Mayo currently lectures in the Print Media and Drawing Workshop at the School of Art & Design, Australian National University. She has exhibited at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Heide Museum of Modern Art, the University of New South Wales and RMIT, and is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia and Artbank. In 2019 she was awarded First Prize in Castlemaine Art Museum’s inaugural Experimental Print Prize.
For collectors of contemporary printmakers or keepers of their own little beasts, ‘My Beasties’ is a delightful find – an ode to motherhood and the children it runs after.
