Mirka Mora was a prolific creator. Whether on a doll, wall, broach or casserole dish, she impressed her magical world-view, drawing hybrid creatures derived from fairy tales, folk art, surrealism and her own imagination.

This ceramic sculpture, created in collaboration with ceramisist Christopher Sanders, is alive with Mora’s joi de verve — a quality miraculous when placed against her family’s narrow survival of the Holocaust. It was this adversity however, that gave such infectious buoyancy to Mora’s work, a lust for life born in an understanding of its precarity.

Food, family, art, love — this ceramic holds the pillars of a happy life, a dedication to living well from an icon of Australian art. It recalls Mora’s parallel life as a restaurateur and social sun bringing Melbourne’s art scene together at the iconic Tolarno Hotel.
