Amanda Upton’s visual world is equal parts whimsical and mysterious. Her characters occupy richly detailed scenes, sometimes fantastical, sometimes familiar. In ‘Surry Hills’, she pictures a tavern of mythical patrons. There are masked women with wings, cosy compatriots with horns and guffawing clowns. The Sydney suburb turns mystical.

Upton is an acclaimed artist and illustrator. Her work was included in Luerzers Archive Magazine collection of the world’s best illustrators and she was a Walkley Award finalist in 2000. She began her career as a cadet illustrator for the Courier Mail, then Sydney Morning Herald.

Reminiscent of magic realism, Upton’s vision finds the magic in everyday life. Her vision is imaginative, bewitching and female-first. For collectors of contemporary prints and works on paper, behold ‘Surry Hills’.
