Carol Carstairs was a French born artist who worked in Scotland and Australia. As well as her fine art practice, she trained as a gilder and even worked to restore the gold-encrusted ceiling of the Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh. This is to say that gold was familiar to Carstairs, peppered as it is through ‘Nocturne en bleu VI’.
Carstairs paints a grid of rich nocturnal blues shifting from navy to cobalt, punctuated by squares of gold leaf. In the enigma of her composition lie multiple interpretations – is this a city at night, the sky scattered with stars or a plane yet more metaphysical? Nocturne en bleu VI is regal, velveteen and sumptuous to the eye.
Represented at the National Gallery of Australia, Carstairs’s work will enrich collections of abstract and contemporary art. Box framed and ready to hang, ‘Nocturne en bleu VI’ represents a glistening jewel for any interior.
