Pasquale Giardino is a rebel in art and life. He was a founding member of Melbourne’s Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist-run-initiatives. Conceived as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, Giardino and his fellow artists – who included David Larwill, Jill Noble and Mark Schaller – set about dismantling society’s expectations of image-making.
In the original painting ‘St Kilda Marina’, Giardino pays homage to the iconic Melbourne suburb. All the landmarks are present: the promenade; Luna Park; and migration of penguins. Through his use of line, Giardino creates a sense of energy and tranquility, a perfect day out exploring a historic Melbourne destination.
Represented at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Giardino is a compelling figure in Australian art. A child of punk, jazz and rebellion, he is a must for collectors of Roar, contemporary and Melbourne art.
