Look how she swirls across the page - Anne Hall’s 'Wild Eyed Dancer' pictures a figure as she dresses. Her femininity, expressed through a tutu and comb is tangled up in her yearning to be free. The effect is beguiling and dizzying, like a drinking champagne at a party.
Like Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling female voice in an otherwise male dominated space. That her career was at times overshadowed by her marriage is a testament to the era’s issues with gender parity.
Now, collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and Geelong Gallery, her absence is being redressed. For collectors of modern art and female artists, take a spin with 'Wild Eyed Dancer'.
