Anne Marie Hall 'Drawing for Christ Stilling the Tempest' - Collected by Sheena

Dated 1976, Anne Marie Hall’s ‘Drawing for Christ Stilling the Tempest’ depicts the story of Christ calming Lake Galilee. He was travelling with his disciples across the lake when a great storm began to blow. Threatening to capsize them, Christ commanded the wind and sea still and when it did, his awestruck disciples declared “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”.

In her iteration, Hall evokes the ferocity of the storm. Licks of indigo ink swirl around a red boat, washing from wave to blackening cloud. Light emanates from Christ while three pigs bob in a ray of light. Like her husband, John Perceval, Hall was interested in Christian iconography. While she too depicted it with a frenetic energy, recalling both Perceval’s style and character, her style remains distinctively and captivatingly hers.

Like Joy Hester and Mirka Mora, Hall forged a compelling female voice in an otherwise male dominated field. That her career was at times overshadowed by her marriage is a testament to the era’s issues with gender parity. Now, collected by The National Gallery of Australia, the Ian Potter Museum and Geelong Gallery, her absence is being redressed. For collectors of modern art and female artists, ‘Drawing for Christ Stilling the Tempest’ will awe.
