Known for his irreverent and exuberant style, David Larwill made his artistic debut as a founding member of ROAR Studios. Among Melbourne's earliest artist-run-initiatives, this studio pioneered raw, primitive and intuitive art – acting as a proverbial roar against the art establishment.

In ‘Yes’, Larwill presents a happy couple. Perhaps the title’s affirmation describes agreeing to wed, a date or the offering of a flower - either way, there seems much to celebrate. All around them shapes sparkle, whirring like bees on a spring day. Buttery yellow spills across the backdrop.

Despite the appearance of spontaneity, Larwill’s visual language is the fruit of a considered mind. It is childlike yet cool, harmonic and purposefully idiosyncratic. He is represented in most regional and state collections including at the National Gallery of Victoria and National Gallery of Australia.
