A World Observed: Mapping the landscapes of Damon Kowarsky

Through his art, Damon Kowarsky animates the world around him, rendering it as it is felt and lived through his own experience. Balancing imaginative sensitivity with rigorous technical skill, Kowarsky’s prints reveal the subtle rhythms of place. Each work feels both carefully observed and thoughtfully reinterpreted, grounded in reality yet heightened through the artist’s distinctive visual language.

For the Melbourne-based Kowarsky, his affinity with printmaking began in art school. Compelled by the creative possibility of the medium, but also fascinated by the technical skills he was required to learn, he soon developed his distinct artistic style, one that was strongly influenced by his foundation in illustration. The resulting works are atmospheric and highly detailed, representations of the world through his own personal lens.

Although based in Australia, travel has become a central focus to both Kowarsky’s life and work. Spending half the year travelling and living overseas, often on artist residencies, Kowarsky has consistently found inspiration from local and foreign landscapes. Often initially drawing on location and then later translating this into his prints in the studio, Kowarsky creates impressions of landscapes both known and unknown that appear immediately familiar.

Alongside these depictions of the built environment, Kowarsky increasingly explores the intersection of natural and urban worlds. We see this in his interpretation of the Melbourne suburb of ‘Richmond (Naarm)’, where the architected rooftops seemingly become engulfed by the canopy of trees. Against constructed landscapes of city buildings, organic forms push back, and nature re-enters the city.

Embedded within Kowarsky’s practice is the idea of sharing - translating moments of discovery and personal experience into something universally accessible. Through nuanced detail and unique viewpoints, Kowarsky’s compositions are often intimate reflections of how he views his surroundings; the world, through his lens, waiting to be discovered.
