Aileen Dent

B. 1890 – 1979 

 

Aileen Dent was born in New South Wales. She studied at the National Gallery School and is the most-exhibited woman artist in the Archibald Prize with 63 works hung between 1921 and 1962. While also a painter of florals, Dent is best known for her portraits, particularly her portrait of Australian aviator Jean Burns. 

 

For many years, Dent had a studio on Little Collins Street where in 1933, she painted a portrait of prime minister Joseph Lyons. Her work is represented across public collections including at the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Victoria.
