Alma Figuerola

B. 1895 – 1902

A member of the Max Meldrum circle, Alma Figuerola was born into an artistic family. She was first taught painting by her father before attending classes at Max Meldrum’s art school. Across her career, she had solo exhibitions at the Meldrum Gallery, Athenaeum Gallery and Georges Gallery, and conducted tonalist art classes from her studio in Kew.

Figuerola was devoted to her local art scene. She participated in art exhibitions at Hawthorn Municipal Library, was a co-organiser of successive Kew Arts Festivals in 1939 and 1940 and was a founding member of the Kew Historical Society.

Represented at the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Figuerola produced poetic still lifes and landscapes, exemplifying Max Meldum's theory of tonalism.
