Arch Cuthbertson

B. 1924 – 2001

Born in Geelong, Victoria, Arch Cuthbertson was committed to Australian modernism. Across his fruitful career, he worked between cubism, hard-edge and abstract expressionism, producing imagery that was in conversation with art at large. As one art critic wrote, his approach was like old-time jazz: energetic, alive and improvisational.

Recipient of the Geelong Prize for watercolour and Swan Hill Art Gallery Prize, Cuthbertson was also a devoted art educator, having taught at teachers colleges in Geelong and Ballarat, and ending his teaching career as a Senior Lecturer at Deakin University. A lifelong friend of Roger Kemp and Leonard French, his work is represented across public collections including at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of South Australia and New Parliament House as well as internationally at Rotorua Art Gallery New Zealand and the University of New York.
