Christina Asquith Baker

B. 1868 - 1960

Christina Asquith Baker was a London-born Australian artist best known for her paintings, lithographs and textile art. Upon leaving secondary school, Baker sought professional artistic training  in Melbourne through the 1880s and 1890s. She studied drawing under prolific Australian artist Frederick McCubbin at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School and later at the Melbourne School of art under E. Phillips Fox. In 1896, Baker showed her work in public for the first time at the Victorian Artist’s Society.

Although beginning her formal training in Australia, Baker travelled to France and England in 1902 to further her studies in painting, printmaking and lithography and to exhibit her works in Paris and London. Returning to Melbourne three years later, she taught painting and drawing classes at her studio, before being elected to the Council of the Victorian Artist’s Society.

Baker continued to paint and exhibit for the remainder of her life. Her works are held in major collections across Australia, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art.
