Clement Meadmore
B. 1929 – 2005
Born in Melbourne, Clement Meadmore was an Australian-American furniture designer, sculptor and visual artist. He displayed a commitment to public sculpture, producing abstract forms in steel and bronze that traded in force and elegance, inspired by Minimalism, jazz and Abstract Expressionism.
Meadmore first studied aeronautical engineering at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology before switching to industrial design. He departed Australia for Manhattan in the 1960s, staying there until he passed in 2005. Represented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Art Institute of Technology, the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Meadmore was driven by the belief:
“A building is part of the environment, but a sculpture is a presence inhabiting the environment.”
