Douglas Kwarlpe Abbott

B.  1948–2015

Douglas Kwarlpe Abbott was an Arrernte artist who worked across oil, watercolour and acrylic painting. Raised near Idracowra on the banks of the Finke River south of Alice Springs, Abbott was the grandson of the celebrated Hermannsburg painter Albert Namatjira.

As a child, Abbott observed his grandfather and other artists of the Hermannsburg watercolour movement at work, an experience that profoundly shaped his artistic path. While grounded in the visual traditions of the Hermannsburg School, Abbott developed a distinctive practice of his own. His paintings revisit the iconic ranges, riverbeds and desert country of Central Australia associated with the Hermannsburg tradition, yet reinterpret them through energetic compositions and expressive use of colour. Through this approach, Abbott honoured the legacy of his grandfather while reimagining the landscape through a contemporary and personal perspective.

Abbott’s paintings are held in major art institutions across Australia, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Queensland Art Gallery.
