Enos Namatjira
B. 1920-1966
Enos Namatjira was an artist and the eldest son of Albert and Rubina Namatjira. His father was of the Western Arrernte language group and his mother was of the Kukatja people. After finishing school he found work as a camel boy, accompanying his father and fellow artist Rex Battarbee on painting trips.
In 1945 he started painting himself, and his watercolour works contributed significantly to the Hermannsburg School. Although known for his landscapes of his local land, he also created more figurative works, including representations of hunting scenes. In this way, he often blended Western and First Nations modes of representation.
Enos is widely represented across Australian institutions, including the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia, and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
