Ewald Namatjira
B. 1930-1984
Ewald Namatjira is a Hermannsburg School artist of the Western Arrernte language group, and the third son of Albert and Rubina. As a child he often accompanied his father on painting trips, and in 1947 started to watercolour painting himself. In 1949, at the age of 19, he was involved in a hunting accident with a rifle which cost him the sight of his right eye, however, he fortunately recovered from the injury and continued to paint. He is best known for his atmospheric Australian landscapes and use of vibrant golden yellows and purples.
Ewald’s works are held in many major Australian art collections, including the Joseph Brown Collection at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and the National Gallery of Australia.
