Figurative Art
The term Figurative Art became useful at the advent of abstraction. In distinction to Abstract Art, Figurative Art describes works of art that are strongly based in the real world – landscapes, portraits, still lifes and depictions of the human body. While recognisable to the viewer, Figurative Art does not necessarily transcribe an objective reality. Rather, from Expressionism to Neo-Expressionism, Pop Art and Surrealism, Figurative Art injects subjectivity, style and emotion into the world around us. It makes us look at the familiar, anew.
