Jacqueline Hick

B. 1919 – 2004

Working across multiple disciplines, Australian artist Jacqueline Hick is widely celebrated for her atmospheric, figurative paintings. She was born in Adelaide in 1919 and spent the early part of her career travelling Australia, England, France and Italy.

These experiences informed a style characterised by dark, tonal colour palettes and a moody, sometimes melodramatic, atmosphere. Applying both social realist and surrealist ideas, Hick explored themes of isolation and suffering, with some of her strongest work infused by a critique of modern urban living and the persecution treatment of Aboriginal people.

With a career spanning over five decades, Hick practiced and exhibited art until her death in 2004. Her artworks are represented across major Australian institutions including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of South Australia, where she was a member of the board.
