Jamie Boyd

B. 1948

Born in Melbourne in 1948, Jamie Boyd is a distinguished Australian painter and sculptor, widely regarded as the most significant living member of the renowned Boyd artistic dynasty. Son of Arthur Boyd, Jamie was immersed in art from an early age, first studying under his father before the family moved to London in 1959. He began painting full-time at 17 and later trained at the Central School of Art and Design, and the Michael Karolyi Foundation in France, where he won the Fondation Karolyi Award in 1965.

Boyd’s work, spanning painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, blends the poetic with the observational. Known for his lyrical and dreamlike compositions, he brings a refined sensitivity to both landscape and the human figure. A master colourist, his art evokes the atmospherics of place, whether the European countryside or the Australian bush, with subtlety and depth.

He held his first Australian solo exhibition at Bonython Galleries, Adelaide, in 1966 and has since exhibited widely across Australia and Europe, including at Palazzo Strozzi (Florence), Gallerie D’Eendt (Amsterdam) and the City of London Festival.

Boyd’s work is held in major public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia, Bundanon Trust, Artbank, and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. Though based in London, he frequently returns to Australia to paint.

Jamie Boyd continues to evolve his artistic practice with experimentation and sensitivity, forging a unique voice within the legacy of one of Australia’s most celebrated art families.
