Jessie MacKintosh

B. 1892 – 1957

Jessie MacKintosh was an Australian painter, printmaker and photographer. She came of artistic age alongside Margaret Preston, Ethel Spowers and Sybil Craig, who all remain vital voices in Australian modernism.

Like many of her female peers, MacKintosh was dexterous. As well as producing fine art, she illustrated children's book and designed board games. She also studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School and was associated with the George Bell and Arnold Shore Schools.

Active throughout the first half of the twentieth century, MacKintosh's work exemplifies the rise of the female perspective alongside significant social, economic and culture shifts. Represented at the National Gallery of Victoria and several regional galleries, MacKintosh work is both beautiful and historically salient.
