John Glover

B. 1767 – 1849

John Glover, a foundational figure in Australian landscape art, arrived in Tasmania from England in 1831. Having enjoyed a successful career as an artist in England, he set about painting the unfamiliar Australian landscape. From his farm in Launceston, Glover distilled the land en plein air, producing luminous, harmonic compositions reminiscent of his contemporaries J.W. Turner and John Constable.

In 1814 Glover won a gold medal from Louis XVIII for his painting ‘The Bay of Naples’. He is represented across Australian public collections and internationally in the Louvre, Paris. With an award for landscape painting set up in his honour, The Glover Prize, Glover’s influence and collectability persists, a resonating figure in the history of Australian art.
