Del Kathryn Barton

B. 1966

Del Kathryn Barton represents one of Australia’s most popular contemporary artists. Based in Sydney, she works across mediums, forging a visual language that references traditional folklore, the cosmos, motherhood and identity. Her work is characterised by intricate detail, femininity and a feeling of boundless euphoria.

Barton is best known for her signature portrait style, which incorporates psychedelic and fantasy imagery within her work. Her gestural, expressionistic hand reveals a deep interest in lived experiences. Pertinently, her work reflects upon diverse experiences of inhabiting a female body.

A two-time winner of the Archibald Prize (2008 and 2013), Barton is represented across public collections, including at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia and Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art. In 2018, she was honoured with a major retrospective at the National Gallery of Victoria.

For any collector of renowned contemporary Australian art, Del Kathryn Barton represents an enviable find.
