Kathryn Ryan
B. 1965
Australian artist Kathryn Ryan divides her time between her homeland of Warrnambool and the United Arab Emirates. When she first returned to Australia, she was struck by the country’s juxtaposing landscapes, climate and light. Thrilled with this new perspective, she set about distilling the deep symbolic power of the Australian landscape. In Ryan’s work, the viewer encounters a deep intimacy with nature, where shapes become suggestive and concealment coexists with revelation.
Ryan is the subject of a monograph and was celebrated in 2015 with a major retrospective at The Warrnambool Art Gallery. Her bold yet subtle imagery is avidly collected and she is multi-time Wynne Prize finalist.
