Lucy Boyd Beck

B. 1916 – 2009

Lucy Boyd Beck was born into the distinguished Boyd family in Murrumbeena, Victoria, the daughter of Merric and Doris Boyd. She met her husband, ceramicist Hatton Beck, when he came to work for the family’s pottery business which the couple would come to own until 1944 when they sold it to Lucy's brother Arthur Boyd, John Perceval and Peter Herbst.

The Boyd Becks moved to England in 1966 where Hatton worked for the National Gallery and Lucy established a pottery business at Wandsworth Common. The family returned to Melbourne in 1970.

Continuing the Boyd family legacy, Boyd Beck’s practice combined painting and ceramics. She is renowned for her paintings on ceramic tiles and whimsical images of children, both of which are represented in the permanent collection of Heide Museum of Modern Art.
