Maurice Namatjira
B. 1939-1977
Maurice Namatjira was a Western Arrernte watercolourist and the younger son of Albert Namatjira. Working within the renowned Hermannsburg School tradition, Maurice continued the distinctive landscape practice established by his father, painting the rugged ranges, ghost gums and expansive desert country of Central Australia. His watercolours are characterised by a careful sensitivity to light and shadow, as well as a deep attentiveness to place.
Through his work, Maurice Namatjira sustained and extended the Hermannsburg watercolour tradition, translating the landscapes of Arrernte Country into luminous, finely observed compositions. His works are held in major public collections across Australia, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the National Gallery of Australia.
