Melinda Harper

B. 1965

Melinda Harper is among Australia’s foremost abstract artists. A member of the Store 5 Artists’ group, active in Melbourne between 1989 and 1993, her work is a profound exercise in pure looking, impossibly vibrant configurations of colour and form that give rise to unexpected emotions.

Harper works across drawing, collage, screenprint, painting, experimental photographs and handmade embroideries. She is inspired by the American Abstract Expressionists, Modernist Female embroiders and the world around her, the movement of colour across landscapes and timeframes.

Harper was part of Know My Name, the NGA’s major retrospective of Female Artists between 2020 and 2022, was honoured with a retrospective at Heide Museum of Modern Art in 2015 and invited to create work for ABC TV 50 year celebrations. She is represented in numerous public collections — a bright and vital voice in abstract art.
