Norman Lindsay

B. 1879 - 1969

An icon of Australian art, Norman Lindsay's practice spanned drawings, etchings, sculpture and painting. He illustrated the children's book 'The Magic Pudding' and was a cartoonist, illustrator, writer and art editor.

While 'The Magic Pudding' is a beloved Australian text, not all Lindsay's work was as wholesome. Indeed, characterised by his luxuriant depiction of the female form, sexuality and pagan themes, he was also a subject of controversy. Now an important artefact of Australian art history, his notorious work 'Police verso' (1904) was initially accused of blasphemy.

Today, Lindsay's work is featured across public institutions, including at the National Gallery of Australia. He is a critical figure in the narrative of Australian art.
