Patricia Moran
B. 1944-2017
Patricia Moran was a Melbourne-based painter, teacher, and writer, known for her detailed floral oil paintings and commitment to art education. She was in her thirties when she finally followed a life-long dream to study painting full time. Later she became a member of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists and a tutor at the Victorian Artists Society in the 1980s.
Her work gained early recognition with the joint award of the 1982 Alice Bale Overseas Study Award, which enabled her to study and paint in the UK and Europe. Moran exhibited regularly in Melbourne from 1978, with further shows in London. Her early subjects included landscapes, still life, and portraits, but she became best known for her floral compositions in oil.
Beyond her painting practice, Moran made a lasting contribution to art education. She gave workshops, authored instructional articles for The Australian Artist magazine, and published Painting the Beauty of Flowers in Oils (1991), a widely used textbook. Her teaching extended into video with the series Learn Classic Oil Painting with Patricia Moran, which continues to support beginners today.
Her paintings are held in both private and institutional collections, and were featured in Vogue Living in 2016. Through both her art and instruction, Moran played an important role in fostering appreciation and understanding of realist painting in Australia and beyond.
