Romano Stefanelli

B. 1931 - 2016.

The Florence-born Romano Stefanelli was a multi-disciplinary artist, renowned for his paintings, sculptures and prodigious graphic output. He was also celebrated for his large-scale frescos, which adorn numerous religious and secular buildings throughout Italy.

A student of Pietro Annigoni, he continued Annigoni’s legacy of championing figurative painting and preserving the Old Masters’ techniques. He was proficient in a large range of media, including oil (for easel paintings) and tempera (for frescoes and murals); engraving, etching and lithography; and even sculpture and jewellery design, which utilised chisel carving and metal embossing.
