Stewart MacFarlane is an Australian painter who is known for his depiction of urban social scenes and people, using a stark, hyper-realistic style. Often, MacFarlane's works investigate middle-class aspiration, the just-out-of-sight interactions between people and the erotic. His works draw on narrative, using lighting and mise en scene to evoke some drama happening just beyond the frame. 

Macfarlane has held over fifty solo exhibitions of his work in Australia, Asia, U.S.A. and Germany. Having spent considerable time in the US, MacFarlane is influenced by Alex Katz, Janet Fish (who he worked under) and Chuck Close. He is represented at the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, Artbank and Queensland Art Gallery.
