B. 1871 – 1955

Sydney Long is a seminal figure in Australian art history. His Art Nouveau visions of the landscape represented a shift in aesthetics, inviting emotion, mythology and sensation, and “a relief to the realism… which had almost wholly characterised Australian art”.  

In 1937 Long was finalist in the Wynne Prize before going on to win it in 1938 and 1940. He was a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1933 to 1949. Harmonising the decorative with flashes of philosophy, the metaphysical and human yearning, a major exhibition of his works was held at the National Gallery of Australia in 2012.
