Tracey Moffat

B. 1960 -

 

Tracey Moffat is an Indigenous Australian photographer and filmmaker, born in Brisbane in 1960 during the Stolen Generation. Her work explores the cultural and social impact of colonisation on First Nations peoples. Moffatt lives in Sydney and has represented Australia at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017 with her solo exhibition “My Horizon.”

 

She studied visual communications at the Queensland College of Art, from which she graduated in 1982. Her first solo exhibition was showcased in Sydney in 1989 and since then she has exhibited extensively internationally. Best known for her photographic works, Moffatt has also created numerous films, documentaries and videos.

 

The Art Gallery of New South Wales praises her legacy on their website stating: “Tracey Moffat is probably Australia’s most successful artist ever, both nationally and internationally.” Her unique perspective makes her one of the few Australian artists who has successfully cemented her artistry in the global art market. Her works are held in the collections of the Tate, London, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
