Walter Ebatarinja

B. 1915 - 1986

Walter Ebatarinja was a watercolourist of the Hermannsburg school. Born into a family of traditional custodians of Roulbmaulbma, near Ellery Creek, he was the nephew of Albert Namatjira and held tribal authority at Hermannsburg.

Ebatarinja began painting in the early 1940s and, under Namatjira’s guidance, the artist developed a deep understanding of landscape watercolour. His painted works often reflected both his cultural heritage and the Hermannsburg artistic tradition.

Widely celebrated, Ebatarinja’s works are held in the collections of the Art Gallery of South Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria.
