Rick Amor is among Australia’s most collectible artists. Best known for his psychologically incisive landscapes and atmospheric scenes of everyday life, Amor’s 1978 work on paper ‘The Death of John Price’ signals a departure from his signature architectural focus. In this work, Amor uses ink to create lyrical figures, layering fragmented characters atop one another. Blending figurative representation with expressionist sensibilities, Amor creates a palpable sense of motion and tension - the dominant figure raises his fist, threatening to strike. Within this uncertain scene, Amor’s expressive style allows a narrative to emerge - one charged with anger and emotion, punctuated by the hand-written title, ‘the death of John Price’.

In a review for Amor’s exhibition at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Sebastian Smee wrote that he is singular: “there is nobody really like him and important… his commitment unmistakable, his intelligence, acute and his best images impossible to forget.”

Amor has been the subject of numerous public exhibitions at the Art Gallery of South Australia, the National Portrait Gallery, Castlemaine Art Gallery and Australian Print Workshop. In 1999, he was appointed the official war artist and is the subject of two major monographs. For collectors of works on paper and contemporary art, Amor is a striking find.
