Rick Amor is among Australia’s most collectible artists. Best known for his psychologically charged landscapes and atmospheric scenes of everyday life, Amor’s practice is underpinned by a sharp political intelligence. He began his career as a political cartoonist, contributing to publications including Overland, where he served on the board until 1998.
Working in this milieu, Amor produced hand-drawn cartoons that were incisive, immediate, and unflinching — responding directly to contemporary events and sparking public conversation. These works reveal a crucial foundation of his broader practice: an ability to distil complex power dynamics into spare, resonant imagery.
In Untitled (Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May), Amor turns his attention to media power, presenting a darkly humorous caricature of Rupert Murdoch. Exaggerated facial features and ironic text collide with a brooding, almost apocalyptic atmosphere, transforming satire into something closer to moral fable. The result is a work that is both of its moment and enduringly relevant.
Amor has been the subject of numerous public exhibitions, including at the Art Gallery of South Australia, the National Portrait Gallery, Castlemaine Art Gallery, and Australian Print Workshop. His work is held in most major Australian institutional collections. Appointed Australia’s official war artist in 1999, Amor is also the subject of two major monographs. For collectors of works on paper and contemporary Australian art, this cartoon offers a rare and compelling insight into the political origins of one of the country’s most significant artists.
