In 1973, a printmaking studio in Venice – Centro Internazionale Della Grafica Venezia – commissioned nineteen artists to respond to Venice. The portfolio, titled Venice Yesterday Today Tomorrow, brings together senior Italian artists. Disparate in style and philosophy, these works present a portal into the lineage, tensions and desires of Venice, once the heart of Western art.

Valeriano Trubbiani’s ‘Untitled (Ibis of the Night)’ is a striking work of art. A gloved hand strangles a metallic ibis against a backdrop of Venetian architecture. The scene is noirish – a public sculpture assassinated in the public square.

Primarily a sculptor, Trubbiani created metal sculptures in his father’s workshop. His work is surreal and expressionistic, populated by motifs of birds. In 1966 he participated in the Venice Biennale. For collectors of twentieth century art, ‘Untitled (Ibis of the Night)’ is a soaring find.
