In 1973, a printmaking studio in Venice – Centro Internazionale Della Grafica Venezia – commissioned nineteen artists to respond to Venice. The portfolio, titled Venice Yesterday Today Tomorrow, brings together senior Italian artists. Disparate in style and philosophy, these works present a portal into the lineage, tensions and desires of Venice, once the heart of Western art.
Virgilio Guidi’s ‘Untitled (Minimalist Venetian Landscape)’ is a work of astounding restraint. In only a few lines, Venice is evoked – a spectre wavering under the distancing of time.
Guidi exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1922. His work – impressionistic, poetic and nostalgic – will breathe life into collections of twentieth century art.
