In 1973, a printmaking studio in Venice – Centro Internazionale Della Grafica Venezia – commissioned nineteen artists to respond to Venice. The portfolio, titled Venice Yesterday Today Tomorrow, brings together senior Italian artists. Disparate in style and philosophy, these works present a portal into the lineage, tensions and desires of Venice, once the heart of Western art.
Nicola Sene’s ‘Untitled (Sailor Ennui)’ is a portrait of a gondolier. Arms crossed and wistfully gazing into the distance, it speaks to Venetian history and inequality. As of 2015, there was only one female gondolier in Venice – Sene is also the only female artist in this suite. Created at a time where no women would have officially captained the city’s iconic vessels, it is imaginative, at the crest of history and progression.
For collectors of twentieth century art, ‘Untitled (Sailor Ennui)’ is a thought-provoking work, rich in history and identity.
