In intricate lines, and layers of pattern and colour, Elizabeth Banfield constructs a portrait of nature which is wonderfully detailed, and entirely personal. What begins as a vein of a leaf, or a piece of bark, transforms into a topographical landscape - an intimate portrayal of nature, as experienced through the artist’s eyes. Banfield, a renowned printmaker and artist, incorporates both fine-line linocut and hand-stitching in her practice, often stitching pieces of delicate tissue paper together to create her works.

In ‘leaf portrait 1’, Banfield creates the close-up impression of a eucalyptus leaf. Through variations of line and colour, the organic texture of the artist’s subject is clearly accentuated, with gaps in the leaf's surface acknowledging the predation of insects and the harshness of weather endured in the natural world. A simple subject matter, Banfield’s representation is anything but - aligning with her personal artistic vision, Banfield highlights the endless and imperfect beauty found in everyday life.

Since graduating from the South Australian School of Art in 1984, Banfield has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally. Her works are held within several public and private collections both in Australia and overseas, including the Art Gallery of South Australia, the National Library of Australia, and the Brooklyn Art Library in New York. Banfield has also been selected as a finalist in several national print prizes. For collectors of contemporary prints, or those intrigued by enigmatic impressions of the natural world, Banfield’s works are a joy to discover.
