In intricate lines, and layers of pattern and colour, Elizabeth Banfield constructs a portrait of nature which is wonderfully detailed, and entirely personal. What begins as a vein of a leaf, or a piece of bark, transforms into a topographical landscape - an intimate portrayal of nature, as experienced through the artist’s eyes. Banfield, a renowned printmaker and artist, incorporates both fine-line linocut and hand-stitching in her practice, often stitching pieces of delicate tissue paper together to create her works.

In ‘written at the shore (with amendments)’, Banfield creates a vibrant work, bordering on abstraction. Through layers of intricate lines, variations of colour, and patterns derived from nature, Banfield's composition is a nuanced representation of a coastal shoreline. Overlayed with undulating red stitching, the artist maps the rhythms of the ocean, with the ebb and flow of water profoundly felt.

Since graduating from the South Australian School of Art in 1984, Banfield has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally. Her works are held within several public and private collections both in Australia and overseas, including the Art Gallery of South Australia, the National Library of Australia, and the Brooklyn Art Library in New York. Banfield has also been selected as a finalist in several national print prizes.
