Susan Baran is a Sydney-based artist, printmaker, and printmaking tutor, best known for a practice that frequently incorporates the photopolymer photogravure technique. In Baran’s prints, worlds unfold vividly. Intricately and deliberately composed, her vibrantly coloured images of everyday objects appear at once otherworldly and unfamiliar, infused with a tangible sense of surreality.
Baran’s 2022 work ‘Sitting Room with Guitar’ exemplifies the artist’s ability to merge reality with invention. The scene, a representation of a room in a house, seems to emerge from a fictitious setting, with each carefully considered element seemingly imbued with its own narrative. Through saturated colour, this domestic interior is transformed into something quietly enigmatic, inviting the viewer to imagine the lives, memories and stories that might exist beyond the confines of the depicted space.
Across her career, Baran has exhibited extensively in both group and solo exhibitions throughout Australia. Her prints are held in several public collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Artbank, and the Print Council of Australia, where she serves as a committee member. For collectors drawn to vibrant, layered contemporary printmaking, Baran’s works would make an intriguing and distinctive addition to any collection.
