‘The White Table Cloth’ is quintessential Charles Blackman. Taken from his Alice and Wonderland series, it pictures a table atop with bacchanalian revelry. There’s wine, flowers and fruit. Not all however, is as it seems - like spectres from the great beyond, disembodied faces press through the cloth. The ghostly outline of a cat and rabbit whisper, as hovering bottles fill glasses.
Blackman’s contribution to art lay perhaps most strikingly with his balancing of the sweet and sad. What could be pure whimsy, is rendered ghostly. Loss, mortality and confusion bleed through the party’s sparkling veneer. Melancholy meets magic.
For collectors of Blackman and admirers of his legacy, the iconic ‘The White Table Cloth’ is a captivating find. It is rare, originally printed by the University of Queensland Press. Pull up a chair at this haunted tea party.
